VTOC ERROR

Postby Bad Man » Fri Aug 27, 2010 8:35 pm

I am trying to pull up some volumes in 3.4 and they say VTCO error and also some reporting jobs failed saying

IEF142I OPS1D206 STEP01 - STEP WAS EXECUTED - COND CODE 0007
FDR420 UNIT=0611 VOL=THDLA1 PROCESSING BYPASSED - UCBVTOC DOES NOT MATCH LABEL
FDR420 UNIT=0614 VOL=THRSA1 PROCESSING BYPASSED - UCBVTOC DOES NOT MATCH LABEL
FDR492 PRINT REPORTS FUNCTION ENDED - 02.27.40 - CONDITION CODE 000

FDR498 FDREPORT(5.4/62P ) PROCESSING COMPLETED WITH ERRORS

I am thinking of varying the device offline and online but I wanted to run it by this group before this. This volume resides DSN's related to ZOS1.11 and so I am not really comfortable touching it I mean offline and online it...

What does the FDR manual say about the error message FDR420?

Manual says a lot of things and I am not understanding about them ....This volume does show up in one Lpar.....and I have learnt this does not have an FDR model dataset on it..

Hello,

Suggest you work with your storage management people. They will know the specifics of your system.
Hope this helps,

To me, the message suggests that the volume serial stored in the UCB does not match the volume serial stored in the volume label of the volume. This is a very serious error; you should immediately bring this to the attention of the storage people at your site. Possibly (and I'm just guessing here) someone (your storage people, most likely), running in a different LPAR, initialized the volume using an offline process, which is why it is only seen on your LPAR with an incorrect volume serial. When you do get the volume back I' think you'll find its contents do match your expectation.

Good luck.

OK. I'm unsure what FDR support is trying to accomplish with the MOUNT command. However, the messages issued while running the MOUNT command should reveal the actual volume serial. I would be reluctant to use it in what I perceive to be your situation.

If you are, in fact, the storage person then you need to determine the actual volume serial. Your initial idea of doing a VARY address,OFFLINE followed by a VARY address,ONLINE should do this, but it will work only if no other job has the device allocated. You can quickly determine if the device is allocated by using the D U,,,address,1 command. The output from the D U command will tell you if the device is allocated. After the VARY ONLINE command completes, the output from the D U command should reveal the volume serial.

Bad Man,
Are you familiar with parameter USE=STORAGE on the mount command? Do you want the volume mounted as a STORAGE device?

Steve even I feel like offline and online will work...

This is what the output is:

RO *ALL,D U,,,0611,4
IEE421I RO *ALL,D U,,,0611,4 187
IPO1 RESPONSES ---------------------------------------------------
IEE457I 10.28.33 UNIT STATUS 186
UNIT TYPE STATUS VOLSER VOLSTATE
0611 3390 O THDLA1 PRIV/RSDNT
0614 3390 O THRSA1 PRIV/RSDNT
SDEV RESPONSES ------------------------------------
IEE457I 10.28.33 UNIT STATUS 305
UNIT TYPE STATUS VOLSER VOLSTATE
0611 3390 O THDLA1 PRIV/RSDNT
0614 3390 O THRSA1 PRIV/RSDNT
TECH RESPONSES ------------------------------------
IEE457I 10.28.33 UNIT STATUS 667
UNIT TYPE STATUS VOLSER VOLSTATE
0611 3390 O THDLA1 PRIV/RSDNT
0614 3390 O THRSA1 PRIV/RSDNT

As we can see its not allocated...

These volumes were inited by me however the ZOS folks deleted the ABR datsets on them....

Bill if I use this command I am not going to use "USE=STORAGE" but will use "USE=PRIVATE"(learnt it from FDR had a chat with them), this is the first time I am hearing of this Mount command...

USE=STORAGE had a meaning before SMS. SMS managed volumes are now usually mounted with the PRIVATE attribute. I would not use the STORAGE attribute since they are not SMS managed, at least initially. When you use the PRIVATE option for a volume that is not SMS managed, you must specify the volume serial to allocate a data set on the volume.
