SYNCSORT Report for Dummies

Postby JohnH » Thu Oct 11, 2012 4:44 pm

I've been using SYNCSORT for years, but only for simplistic sorting. Now, I'd like to take better advantage of the product by using it for reporting, but I'm finding the book hard to understand. Basically, I need to select SMF70 subtype 1 records, sort them by date/time, and print a report. The report would have one row for each record and includes, at a minimum, the date, time, and field SMF70LAC printed in the form mm/dd/yyyy, hh:mm:ss, and ###,###,##0.00. I would like the input to be from SORTIN, the sorted output (if required) to go to SORTOUT, and the report to go to SORTRPT. My requirement is much more complex than this, but if you can get me "kick started" with the above, I can do the rest.

Question: Is there a book somewhere like "Smart DFSORT Tricks", only for SYNCSORT?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I've never heard of such a publication. SyncSort don't even provide documentation for SyncTool, as far as I know.

You could contact SyncSort to check anyway.

Which leaves you google, searching here, searching the sister-forum (for non-students and beginners) www.ibmmainframes.com. And doing the "obvious" with what you have located already.

Hello,

Question: Is there a book somewhere like "Smart DFSORT Tricks", only for SYNCSORT?
No, but many of the DFSORT Smart Tricks work with the more current release of Syncsort. They will probably never be exactly the same.

We have several people with considerable experience using Syncsort, but Syncsort Support has exponentially more depth.

I believe when one starts working with SMF data, the work has moved beyond "dummies" :)
Hope this helps,

If they are Copyright, then I'm afraid you can't. A pity, as I'd like to see them :-)

Hello,

Syncsort does not permit general distribution of their documentation. If it is found anywhere other than Syncsort, it is stolen. All licensed users may download all of the material from Syncsort Support for free.

We are neither permitted to provide them on our forum nor link to them elsewhere.

If any proprietary material is posted here or link(s) provided, we must delete it.
Hope this helps,

SyncSort support would be the only place if they are SyncSort-produced.

I posted this earlier today (I think) but I do not see it anymore. I'll try again.

I called Syncsort a few years ago and said I am an application developer and could they point me to sysnsort manual and how-to examples. They setup an account for me that I still use and now I have access to hundreds of pdf sysnsort documents.

But that is a totally useless link unless one has a userid and password issued by syncsort and if someone did have these and shared them then they would be open to prosecution (and probably dismissal)
The problem I have is that people can explain things quickly but I can only comprehend slowly.

Nic

Hi Nic,

I didn''t delete this again as i thought it might encourage someone to get their login from Syncsort . . .

Yup, i deleted the first one because of the unacceptable link to the doc. As i mentioned earlier:
