Syncsort Backup Express Speed

Postby jhshah » Tue Feb 02, 2010 9:59 pm

Hello,

We used to use Qualstar 4212 tape drive. We do File level Backup. Simpley going to Backup and then File. We currelty upgraded our backup system to HP StorageWorks MSL4048 which uses LTO Tape Drive.

With Qualstar we used to get about 60GB Per Hour with Two Tape Drive, and with HP we are getting about 150GB per hour with two tape drive. We have a SCSI Card installed on Server which is suppose to give us 320MB per Second, and on HP site they are advertising 1.7 TB/hr for Tape Drive. Obviously we are not getting anywhere close to that. The top backup Speed I have seen is 40 MB/Per Second.

Can anyone tell me if there is any way I can increase my backup speed or that's the way it's going to be?

Thank you

Wouldn't this be an issue to raise with HP since you're not getting their advertised speed?

I don't think it's completely HP issue. Even when we had Qualstar we didn't get good speed. I even ran the Fake job which backup data, but doesn't right on the tape, and even that the speed was not good. I think the speed I got was around 10MB/sec

If you are not willing to work with HP on the issue, you need to consult your site support group and have the network reviewed for bottlenecks. Perhaps a segment is running 10 MB Ethernet, or a router (or switch) is set to half duplex instead of full duplex, or one of the network devices has a packet size set too small, or you've got a cable running parallel to a fluorescent bulb causing too much noise on the line, or one (or more) of the network connectors wasn't properly prepared and causes excess retries, or .... you get the picture. Only your site network people have the understanding and tools to diagnose such a problem.

When I ran the Fake job which is exactly like real job, but it doesn't write to tape. Even at that time the speed was poor that's the reason it made me think that it's not completely HP issue. I'm working with my Network guy too we did do few test which showed that the speed over network was not the issue.
