Can some one tell me what is the difference between the DASD volume mount attributes Storage, Private and Public?

Thank you.

This goes back before SMS, which kind of killed the traditional mount attributes.

Private - Only data sets specified with a volume could be allocated on the volume.

Storage - Only non-temporary data sets could be allocated on the volume

Public - Only temporary data sets could be allocated on the volume.

The rules were similar for tape volumes, but with a kicker. "Public" tapes were not unloaded at end of step or end of job on the theory the volume was available for other uses; the (hopefully) temporary data set could be replaced by another data temporary or non-temporary data set.
