If you cannot look up information like this in the manual yourself, you will have a very difficult (and probably short) career in IT. The manual says:
MAXGPS=n
specifies a number, from 1 to 2520, that is greater than or equal to the total number of IDENT or IDENTG parameters appearing in subsequent RECORD statements. MAXGPS is required if there are any IDENT or IDENTG parameters in subsequent RECORD statements.

Robert, I think Krishnamoorthy A, is asking what the GPS letters mean. I have been forced to be satisfied with the IBM description of IDENT for Identification.... etc., but nowhere does any literature tell us what the letters GPS actually stand for. I would like to know this myself, so if you know, please share. You would be surprised at the number of people who don't know that the "IDC" in IDCAMS actually means, "Integrated Data Clustering", and those people have been around for 30 years. And there's another one... "IEB". I know of no one that knows what that stands for (except for me). So, if you learn or know what "GPS" stands for, please share, because I would love to know.

After 12 years and 11 months from the previous response, I'm not sure how relevant adding on to this topic is. However, if you reference my reply on the other thread, MAXGPS refers to maximum number of (record) groups in the IEBGENER so GPS is the abbreviation for groups.

It specifies the maximum number of allowed IDENT parameters in subsequent statements.

What exactly is not clear in this quote taken from IEBGENER manual?
Javas and Pythons come and go, but JCL and SORT stay forever.

Of course... Groups. I wish they had thrown an "R" in there. This is quite relevant for me. IBM is very cryptic sometimes, but then I can't seem to manufacture words from letters. Concerning "IEB", most shops are represented by two or three letters. Mine is SM (don't know what that means... just an assignment) followed by "G" (my last name), followed by my phone extension "3052". So my logon is SMG3052. Evidently, IBM is/was no different. The "IEB" in the IBM "IEB" utilities were written by the IBM "IEB" group. Pretty simple, but it took years to learn it. Somehow, it makes things a little simpler or closer. So many unexplained acronyms, or pseudo-acronyms! I hope Krishnamoorthy A can read these last posts. Maybe it'll bring him closer to the cause! Thanks, Robert!

Also, Robert, I forgot the IBM detailed meaning of IEB. IEB stands for – Information Edit Batch (I = Information Management System, IMS-EB / IEB). The IEB group wrote the IEB utilities.
