Hi,

We received a sort capacity exceeded error on one our of batch job. Input file is compressed and is only 30trks in size. Our operator had tried increasing the region size from 8m to 256M but still received the same error. We,on the other hand,had tried the 'option dynalloc and option dynalloc=(sysda,n)' but still encountered the same error. But when we define the SORTWK01 DD statement(regardless if its trk(1,1) or trk(10,10) or cyl(100,50) ,we successfully had rc=0. Would like to know the reason why such incident happened. please refer to below attachements for details.

You need to look at the actual error message and read about that message in the documentation.

It will help if you post the jcl and control statements for one of the problem runs and one that works correctly.

Show the difference in the diagnostic info generated by these.

The SORT control statement has an option to give sort an estimate of the number of records in the sort input. Use it! If you give sort a reasonably accurate estimate it can allocate enough sort work space to run the sort without getting sort capacity exceeded.

We also tried adjusting the region size from 1028K, 2M, 8M to 256M but still had sort capacity exceeded error. We had read that we can use option dynalloc or option dynalloc=(sysda,n) but still same error occured. Finally,we define sortwk01 dd statement and the job successfully issued rc=0.

But we're still wondering why defining the sortwk01 resolves the sort capacity exceeded. And we're still looking for other possible solution w/o the need to define sortwork dd stmts.

Hazel,

The filesize DFSORT determined for the VSAM input data set was less than the actual filesize. I suspect based on the filesize, DFSORT didn't think it needed any work space, so it didn't dynamicallty allocate any (either that or your installation is not allowing dynamically allocated work data sets). It may be that the VSAM catalog has incorrect information for the filesize.

Adding one SORTWKnn DD overrode dynamic allocation of work data sets, so one work data set was available.

You could try adding FILSZ=Un where n is a good estimate of the number of records in the input file. Or you could keep the SORTWKnn DD. Or you could try to figure out why the catalog information for the VSAM input data set is incorrect.

If you want somebody to analyze this further, you'll need to open a problem (PMR) with IBM service. The helpboard is not the appropriate place for that kind of analysis.
