Upgrade from DB2 7 to 8

Postby anoop76_99 » Fri Apr 23, 2010 10:44 pm

Hi,
We are upgrading DB2 from 7 to 8. Are there any changes that needs to be made in existing code (from application point of view) to make it compatible with the new version? Please let me know or guide me to the appropriate link.

Thanks,
Anoop

Hello,

Two thoughts come to mind and i'm sure one of them will not be well received.

1. as v9 has been generally available for over 3 years and v10 is already in beta, maybe v8 is questionable. . .

2. IBM has the most informaiton concerning upgrades of db2. Suggest you ask your IBM rep.

If you have some specific question(s) possibly someone here has had a similar experience and can reply. For an overall upgrade list IBM will have much more than we will.
Hope this helps,
d.sch.

Dick, there is no upgrade V7-> V9 you have to pass thru V8.

You can find everything in the V8 Migration guide.

I don't recall any application changes :
-Type 1 indexes aren't supported anymore
-some registers like current sqlid change to varchar
-the catalog changes to unicode and other catalog changes, so programs accessing the catalog tables need to be reviewed.

I had the same issue quite a long time ago
( migrating from n to n+2 )

install the n+1 release just to convert all the system related tables
start the db2 subsystem
run a few queries to check that everything was converted properly

install and activate the n+2 )
obviously on a copy of the acceptance system first
and after that same on the test , system integration, and production

and all keeping the fingers crossed :)
cheers
enrico
When I tell somebody to RTFM or STFW I usually have the page open in another tab/window of my browser,
so that I am sure that the information requested can be reached with a very small effort
