CICS regions optimization

Postby koshal_86 » Mon Aug 06, 2012 5:01 pm

Hi,
I am supporting non-Production environments. Currently, there are 80 CICS regions in SIT and 70 CICS regions in UAT. I need to reduce the number in SIT as part of optimiztion process in terms of "cost saving".

Can someone please help me understand how could I approach in identifying the regions that could be removed??

Thanks in advance.

First, you need to start using standard terminology. SIT for CICS refers to the System Initialization Table, and there's only one of those per CICS region -- so you cannot have "80 CICS regions in SIT" as you posted. Furthermore, the only UAT I'm familiar with is User Acceptance Testing, and how does that fit with your posted statement "70 CICS regions in UAT"? Terminology is critical in IT, where similar terms may mean very different things, and you creating your own terms for things is NOT the way to get help on a public forum -- especially when the terms you're using already have standard meanings.

Second, cleaning up CICS regions requires you -- or somebody at your site -- to identify who (programmers and applications) are using a particular region, and determine whether or not that region could be removed, or combined with another region. How this is done, and which regions can be deleted versus combined, will ENTIRELY depend upon site procedures, standards, and management. Nobdoy at this forum could possibly come up with this information for you -- only somebody working at your site can do this.

if UAT <means> User Acceptance ... SIT <might mean> System Integration ... ;)
cheers

I think I have to agree with Mr. Sorichetti: in this context I think UAT and SIT are system names, not possible CICS control area names.

However, I think Mr. Sample's second paragraph is completely accurate. This is a task that requires extensive knowledge of the site, and almost certainly the services of a PAID expert and extensive analysis, not something that this site can provide for free.

You use the "scream" system.

Move regions offline, and when someone screams, you now you've made a mistake.

Hi All,
Thanks for the prompt response. I meant SIT as System Integration Testing in the context.
As suggested, I will check with the programmers and application teams on the same.

Thanks much.

First, what reasons are there or were there to have so many different CICS systems? What kind of workloads are you talking about, how many transactions, etc. ? Is there only one TOR for all the CICS systems? I would guess that each group wanted their own CICS system and you can probably merge to a lot less CICS systems, maybe even only one. If you want opinions you need to post a lot more detailed information and do your research first. To me, it sounds like fun.

I meant SIT as System Integration Testing in the context.
This is the danger of making up your own acronyms (or using site-specific acronyms without understanding that they are site specific) -- SIT has meant System Initialization Table in CICS for many, many, many years at thousands of sites around the world.
