What do DCL and VMS stand for

Postby ritikasingh » Wed Oct 20, 2010 6:30 pm

Job postings are asking for DCL AND VMS. Not sure what exactly they are asking as I haven't heard them before. Please guide me what exactly they are asking.

Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge, both acronyms are related to VAX/VMS machines and have nothing to do with any of the IBM machines. I think DCL is the VAX/VMS batching/scripting language (Digital Control Language?) and I think VMS is Virtual Memory System.

DCL is used in IBM PL/I as an abbreviation for DECLARE.

VMS is a mostly forgotten experimental ancestor of OS/60 MVT. VMS = Variable Memory System. It failed because real storage quickly got hacked into unusable 2K groups. "Scatter" format load modules and the LC and LU type GETMAIN macro are legacies of VMS that are still with us.

Hello,

If both appear in a job posting, they are most likely looking someone with VAX/VMS experience. . .
Hope this helps,
